Students that attend non-public schools such as homeschool have different criteria to obtain the Driving Eligibility Certificate (DEC) than students that attend a private school. See information below.

Opening a new home school in North Carolina:

Home Schools less than 30 days-
Established:
this school can obtain a Driving Eligibility Certificate (DEC).
Home Schools more than 30 days but less than 6 months established:
This Home School can not obtain Driving Eligibility Certificate (DEC) until it has been established for more than 6 months.
Options-wait 6 months before rqeuesting the (DEC)
loophole-the new school can join another school that has been established for more than 6 months temporarily to obtain the certificate. This is referred to as a TWO HOUSEHOLD HOMESCHOOL. There is no paperwork required to join an existing school temporarily to obtain the DEC prior to 6 months. The school that meets the 6 month requirement is the one that will request the DEC and sign as the school, the parent will sign as the parent.
